Chat shows have changed since Parkies' days but then so has the nature of celebrity. Back in his day there was an air of mystique about the big stars that the celebs of today don't have due to their every move being broadcast on social media.

Kids of today don't understand how seldom you'd see your favourite band or film on the box as they can look them up on YouTube or streaming apps at any time.

RIP Michael, we won't see the likes of you again unfortunately.

Re: Michael Parkinson - RIP
Since Parkinson, chat shows are simply promotional jaunts by the guests. Norton hypes this, for example, by holding up the new book, album or playing film clip. Nothing too wrong with that although, at times, the interviews feel construced. Watch some of Parkinson’s interviews and they are far more analytical and, at times, deeply insightful and revealing regarding the interviewee. That said, at times they were marvellously entertaining and often allowed guests space to storytell. I’m thinking of David Niven, Billy Connolly, Dame Edna, in particular. RIP Michael Parkinson.

Some cracking interviews with Ali are worth tracking down.

Excellent at what he did - listening is such a lost skill these days.

Used to enjoy his radio 4 Parkinson on Sport show too. Proper journalism to go with his broadcasting persona.

There's not many of these old school show biz people left now, Tarbrush almost the last man standing.

Re: Michael Parkinson - RIP
Unlike modern talk show hosts he didn’t make the show about him, he asked a question and let the guest talk and you found out so much more.

Absolute legend.
